3rd IDE port on 600sc (1.7 celeron)

I got around to using the 3rd ide port on my 600sc...
I'm seeing about 2 Mbyte/sec on the 3rd port -- with drives which on
the first port run 50-60 Mbyte/sec (which hdparm).
I'm using 2.6.20.17 (which has both normal ide and libata drives).
Sometimes accessing the drives on my 3rd port, I see kernel crashes:
(no oops, hangs) and "NMI received messages". (this is from the fedora7
distributed kernel).
On some configurations I saw 50-60 M/sec on the 3rd ide (no mounts) and
2 M/sec on ide1.
When I swapped ide 2 and 3, I get a hard warning on boot (and have to press a
key to continue in the bios).
What type of speed should I see from the 3rd ide bus?

I've been building kernels (in all types of configurations)
