afacli aborts on "open afa0"

Thanks for the information.
I had encountered the same here on old PE 4400 system We upgraded to
etch.
Maybe the following note is of importance in the description of the
afa-apps-snmp.2807420-A04.tar.gz package :
Important Information
* This software code release requires all V2.8 components; firmware,
device driver and management utilities. Using some components from
previous
releases may cause some unknown errors.
I'm not so sure myself of the latest firmware installed or not.
