sounds like the PCIe "memory hole".
The way I understand it is the top of lowmem addresses are being reserved
for 'critical' PC subsystems (PCIe is the biggest hog). The memory is still
there, but above the addressable memory space of the 32-bit kernel.
The fix is to run 64-bit or use a kernel that can address memory above 4gb
(hugemem).
