I'm looking into CPU replacements. I have an 1850 that describes
itself thus (one of 4 cores):
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 4
model name : Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz
stepping : 1
cpu MHz : 2992.622
cache size : 1024 KB
physical id : 0
siblings : 2
core id : 0
cpu cores : 1
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 5
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr
pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm
pbe lm pni monitor ds_cpl cid cx16 xtpr
bogomips : 5989.60
I think this is a Xeon 5050 3.0GHz, but I'm not sure - can anyone
confirm?
I'm not sure of the FSB or total cache size - cpuinfo is misleading
as it's not clear whether it's reporting cache per core or overall
(it reports 4M per core on 5148 and 5320 which I'm sure Intel would
have labelled 16M). Anyway, it's got rather more CPU capacity and
power consumption than strictly necessary, and I may be able to get
hold of 5148 LV 2.33GHz CPUs. 5148s have higher FSB and bigger L2, so
I'm guessing I'd get at least similar performance (all DB stuff) with
them, while about halving power consumption (upon which my billing is
based!)? Are 5148s drop-in compatible with the 1850? Anyone think
that this would be a worthwhile change?
