I saw the same "limitations" in initscripts/ethtool and settled for the
ugly rc.local solution, myself. Modifying initscripts would be a much
better solution, but if it doesn't get into an official RHEL update,
there's always the risk to get an updated RHEL package update your
locally modified one... and run into trouble.
That said, if you're ever able to get the RHEL5 initscripts changed in
a way that allows for "ethtool -K" to be configured in the ifcfg-eth*
file, then I'll definitely start using it :-)
