rsync works fine over ssh, as far as it goes, and I have no problems
with it. It's csync2 that I have trouble with - it's generating its
file list, but then failing to connect over ssl (but giving no errors
even in debug mode). Disabling ssl mode doesn't seem to make it work.
csync2 goes much further than rsync, but the most useful benefit is
that it can track and propagate deletes, which rsync can't even
contemplate.
