After RHEL 4 up2date, automounter doesn't automount?

Folks,
We just completed a 'test' up2date on one of our
RHEL4 Poweredge servers. Some of the updates were to autofs.
The system rebooted fine, the automount processes seems to
start fine and 'service autofs status' gives a good report,
start/stop also seem to work and nothing unusual is logged.
There were not changes to our auto.master or any
of the other map files (excerpt below):
--- auto.master
/home /etc/auto.home rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=50,hard,async,retrans=1
--- auto.home
thebook :/export/home/thebook
When you try to cd to such a directory, the system logs:
Nov 19 18:12:01 hanger automount[20803]: failed to mount /home/thebook
We don't have any problems with regular NFS mounts.
I assume some type of 'default' behaviour is changed -- would
appreciate any suggestions if someone has seen this.
