 Part of this might be related to the EMC support side. EMC arrays as 
far as I know come with support - that's part of the reason you buy em. 
But that support is only provided on 'approved' configurations....
 The field engineers wouldn't know where to start if it isn't a system 
covered in their training. Actually some of the guys probably would 
know, they are not that dumb, but they won't be permitted to deviate 
from the 'approved' line.
