Memory limit on 2850?

The cause of the limitation is the Lindenhurst chipset. The chipset
only supports 8 ranks of memory. The 4 GB memory DIMMS have density
issues which require them to be dual ranked, thus 2 ranks per DIMM use
all 8 ranks available to the system. You could also populate all 6 slots
with 4x single rank DIMMs and 2x dual.

Our Dell systems consultant says our 8Gb. 2850 machines can be upgraded
only to 16Gb, using 4x4Gb modules and leaving two of the six memory bays
empty. Is this correct? What's the cause of the limitation?
