Firmware update trouble

I'd previously run into the "insufficient contiguous memory" problem  
when trying to apply a firmware update on a PE1850 (A01 -> A06), but  
I managed to get around that by rebooting into single user mode. Now  
it reports that the upgrade worked, but afterwards tells me "update  
completed successfully but can not perform the BIOS verification  
after reboot". What's that all about? Do I need to upgrade  
incrementally though all previous firmware versions?
