Perc 5/i and SMARTD

Hi all, recently I've bought a 1950 with the Perc 5/i controller and
three SAS 2.5" drives in a RAID-5 array.

The OS installed is CentOS 4.4 and I'm unable to use smartd to check
the disks health status.

I always got an error and the daemon doesn't start.

Please it is there a way to make the daemon working or do I have only
to switch it off ?

Are there eventually other CLI tools/daemons to be used instead ?
