Ok. I see what is happening now.

The version of yum (2.0.8) in CentOS 3 by default is too old to
understand the yum.repos.d config directory and the mirrorlist
directive.

As far as I can see, this version of yum is much too old for me to
support. The oldest yum version I can support is version 2.4. I tried to
search through google for any good info on getting 2.4 to work on
el3/centos3 and dont see anything. (You might ask kindly of the centos
guys to port 2.4 back to centos3.)

I've gotten up2date to talk to my repos on EL3. I dont know if centos
has up2date or how that all works. I'll have to update the docs to say
that CentOS 3 is (basically) unsupported (or a manual config, as you
have done).

Sorry for the bad news. If anybody has other, better stuff to add, i
would be glad to hear it.
