PowerEdge 2950 Raid

It might just be a question of testing and validation. Mixing SAS and SATA disks on a PERC 5/I might just not have been tested very much so we have chosen not to support/sell it. I really can't say why it's not supported or sold since I was not involved in that decision. I can tell you that I have a server in the lab with this kind of setup (2900, 4 SAS disks + 6 SATA disks) and have had no issues with it.

So as far as I know the only caveats are that it might not have had the same test validation that configurations with all of the same drives have had. But I also know of no reason why this shouldn't work.

Hi Patrick

Please do elaborate.

My danish presales tech guy also said that mixing SAS and SATA isn't supported untill I showed him your post from August 2006 - but he is still hesitant as he is waiting for some internal Dell information about it.

I am on the verge of purchasing a 2950 with 1 pair of SAS disks for OS and at least 2 or 4 SATA disks for storage - and yes, I am aware I can't mix them in a virtual disk, but I'd still like to know what caveats there might be before I place it..

You cannot mix them in a virtual disk. That is the only issue. There are lots of reasons for this that if you really want me to I can go into, but suffice to say that we do not allow protocol mixing in virtual disks. I assume that is why you cannot order them mixed...

I notice you replied to a question I have been trying to get answered through the dell phone support,

I have a 2900, I have mixed drives sas and sata. I was wondering why this isn't allowed config when ordering?

But seems to work just fine? Is there any performance or issues why they don't allow this during config or does dell just want you to buy all same drives?

I noticed in your post on http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-poweredge/2006-August/026769.html

You mention it is ok? Could you explain briefly why dell doesn't allow this when configuring the server?

Thanks

-Norbi
