PowerEdge, CentOS and LTO2: Tape is extremely slow 2 to 4 MB/s

Just another data point:.

I'm running CentOS 4 on a PE 1650 backing up to an LTO1 tape drive, and I
get about 1 gigabyte per minute using tar.
