Note some applications will see a growth in memory usage that approaches
double on a 64bit distro so there can be noticeable downsides.
I think to an extent it depends what other systems you have what your
'default' position should be. But then there's nothing stopping you running a
64bit kernel and running 32bit applications (as needs require). With the
number of large memory machines we use I tend towards x86_64 as my default
position.
