News flash: Different hardware is different. If you want the same hardware, buy the same hardware. Dell's business is selling modern, performant hardware. If we wished to go out of business, we would do exactly as you suggest, and keep using the same chipset for every generation of servers and let HP and IBM trumpet in their press releases how much faster, quieter, and cooler they are. Thanks for the suggestions.

Oh, ok. Problem solved. We release mainline kernel modules for all of our server class hardware. I trust we dont have to worry about hearing this particular rant anymore.
Oh, and for those following along... 2.6 is mainline and has been mainline for, what, a couple years now? Hey, we even do you a favor and provide precompiled backports for those of you running OUR SUPPORTED ENTERPRISE CLASS linux distros.
Everything you have been ranting about is OPEN SOURCE! You are free to backport it to linux 1.2 if you want. It is NOT DELL'S PROBLEM if you are running some old stuff. Considering that it is all open source, you have to have some sort of cutoff point, or the maintenance goes up exponentially if you expect support for every freaking kernel every released.
If you want to give Dell Custom Solutions the requisite amount of money, I am sure they would be happy to do the work to provide you with backported drivers.
Thanks and have a great day!
