Anyone running CentOS 4.5 or 5 on PE2970

I'd grab a usb-cdrom, burn the minmal boot.iso (from os/xxx/images) and try a 
http install (pick a mirror, any mirror). This will take IDE and possibly bad 
cd-drive out of the equation.
