Hi,

I encounter this issue months ago.

I have a PE2900 with 750GB * 6( raid 5 for storage) ( similar to your case)
I got two more, 160GB * 2 (raid 1)(for OS)

My solution is as follow,
==================================================
I use CentOS5.0
and the 3TB drive use XFS , not ext3.
==================================================
step
1) install CentOS on raid 1, do not create any thing on the raid 5 at this
point.

2) enable the CentOSplus repository , and install the XFS patch for kernel
and also install the XFS tool

3) reboot , and configure the raid 5 with XFS.

Then I got a 3TB partition. ( I use 5 harddisks for raid and 1 for hot
spare)
==================================================
For RHEL , you may have to compile the kernel yourself and take risk
