I'd say that USB/RS-232 adapters are probably the way to go. That
said, one can also get PCI RS-232 cards. I've got a two port model
that has 16550 UART hardware compatibility. There are also "smart"
serial cards which offer better performance and up to hundreds of
ports on a single card; these tend to be well-supported under Linux.
