usb not working in X11

I have successfully loaded Debian Testing on to my Dell 2950
 
However the system has a USB mouse and keyboard so when X11 tries to
start I get the errors
 
Failed to load module "kbd" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "mouse" (module does not exist, 0)
No devices detected
 
any ideas?
