DSET on a Debian system

Has anyone gone through the work to make DSET work on a Debian system?
One can get the rpm converted into a deb package, but the Dell scripts
are riddled with hardcoded paths which are correct for Debian (e.g.
/bin/basename). I'm sure there are lots of other problems (like the
propensity to use rpm).
Actually **all** I want to do is be able to dump the ESM log and clear
it. I don't want Dell to tell me about my hardware and software. Anyone
been down this road before??
