No. Once installed it reboots fine. It's only booting from the  
OpenSUSE install CD that fails at the second stage.

Part of the problem is the machine is inherited and nobody knew what  
hardware it had in it.

That certainly make sense. USB device detection happens shortly before  
the failure.

Just skipping the pata_serverworks driver whilst booting from the CD  
cures the problem at any rate.
