PE 2850 Cant boot with RHEL4 kernel 2.6.9-42.ELsmp "switchroot: mount failed: 22"

Well in some circumstances the the installer/updater has to label it /
1 because it thinks the label / already exists.
I'd write a new label on the file system with tune2fs -L instead of
editing grub.conf.
