2950 - Debian etch amd64 - Broadcom BCM5708

Running through the etch amd64 installer on a PowerEdge 2950, the 2 network
cards are detected as 'Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5708 Gigabit
Ethernet' but the installer then fails on DHCP.  If I set static network info
I still have failures, the apt setup fails for example because it can't find
a mirror.  I can ping the machine's locally set IP address but it can't see
anything else on the LAN.

Help with the details of getting these Broadcom NICs working in Debian would
be greatly appreciated.
