I basically had the same problem, I ended up loading the latest version
of Etch, the problem with the Perc driver has been fixed in that
version.

Subject: Debian install fails on poweredge 1950/megaraid_sas

Hi,
I am trying to install Debian (from Debian 4 netinst ISO, kernel
2.6.18-486) on a brand new Dell Poweredge 1950. The installer detected
PERC 5i RAID SAS and harddisks, but the system will not boot after the
install, probably because the megaraid_sas driver is not being loaded
from the initrd. I've tried rebooting from a rescue disk and
mounting/chrooting and tried the following -nothing has helped.

echo megaraid_sas >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
update-initramfs -u -k all

Also tried:
echo megaraid_sas >> /etc/mkinitramfs/modules
mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-486 2.6.18-486

I tried updating the driver using megaraid_sas-v00.00.03.09-1.noarch.rpm
downloaded from Dell.

I tried installing yaird as a initram loader and did the following:

yaird --output initrd.img-linux-image-2.6.18-486 2.6.18-4-486
Add to /etc/kernel-img.conf:
ramdisk = /usr/sbin/mkinitrd.yaird

I also tried a 2.6.20 kernel. Does have any any suggestions?

Thanks,
Cindy
