Yes, that is the case.  I can boot linux and use linux tools including
afacli. While I haven't used bonnie++ before, I'll look into it.  Any quick
and dirty tips would be most welcomed.

But I suppose I'm also looking to do the lowest-level-possible type tests to
move/remap bad or dead sectors, etc which might bring an otherwise disk
deemed "dead" back to life.
