1435 fan issue

Hi there.
Apologies if this isn't quite the correct mailing list, but this does
relate to /trying/ to install Linux on a Poweredge server :-)
I have a dual-processor 1435 with 2GB RAM (4x512). For reasons not
worth going into, I wish to "downgrade" this to a uni-processor
machine with 1GB RAM.
So I removed the second processor and 2x512 sticks, and the machine
boots up. The setup menu all seems fine, and reports a single
processor and 1GB RAM.
However, I get diagnostic lights 1,2 and 3 lit up, but 4 not - which
means "other error".
And most importantly, the fans are going mental! Whereas they usually
start up at high RPM then run down, in this configuration they start
up high, run down, then very quickly go high again and stay like that.
As soon as I put the second processor back (and the extra RAM as 2
processors require 2GB RAM) everything goes back to normal.
Can anyone think what may be wrong?
Do you need to install a "blanking plate" over the LGA connector when
a processor is removed? That's all I can think of.
Any tips on what may be wrong will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much.
