Travan IDE Tape Drive

We have several PowerEdge servers with the Seagate
STT3401A (now Certance/Quantum) Travan tape drive. This
is an IDE/ATAPI device.

We had been using SCSI Emulation in the kernel so the
device showed up as /dev/st0.

Recently we have had problems backups not working. The
messages are saying it can't open /dev/st0.

  "/dev/st0": can't open archive: errno = 5, Input/output
error

We have been running the cleaning tapes regularly.

Should we be using IDE/ATAPI TAPE support from the kernel
instead? The device would then become /dev/ht0.

This is an older kernel 2.6.11.
