Experiences with 1950 and 2950

We're running both 1850s/2850s and now 1950s/2950s. We've had no
problems at all with the x950s (running RHEL 3 U8). You'll want to make
sure to have the megaraid_sas kernel module (we had to upgrade from U6
to U7/8 in order to get that). Also, the power consumption is greater
for the x950s (though not unreasonably so), so be sure to account for
that. With the cable management in place, the 1950s take up every
millimeter of depth in our racks and the 2950s weren't far behind. Dell
is using every last bit of real estate in a rack unit. Dell _did_
thankfully correct a number of the shortcomings in the 1850s with the
1950s (metal bezel instead of plastic, the back-end connectors are no
longer recessed so that hack of a dongle needed for the NICs is gone,
etc). PS/2 connectors are gone in the x950s so it's straight USB. The
1950s tend to put out a LOT of heat. The 2950s are better because of the
extra rack unit of airspace inside.
All in all, both series are good and we've had good luck with all of them.
Cheers,
Doug
