have OMSA 5.0 email me when a drive fails?

Is there a way to have OMSA 5.0 email me when a drive fails/has a 
problem?  I have a PE6800 with OMSA 5.0 on CentOS 4.4.  On the Alert 
Management tab, I have each Event with a checkmark for execute 
application /root/dell/alert which contains:

echo "problem on 10.8.8.2" | mail -s "problem on 10.8.8.2" 
awilliam at mdah.state.ms.us

and I have the permissions of it so that anyone can execute it, and 
postfix is running so it can be mailed.

Is there a better way to do this?  Also, how can I test if it works 
(short of pulling out a drive, which I don't want to do because its in 
production)?
