Even though I'm the first to point at a random vendor and yell "fix it",
I've seen this issue appear with upgrades to newer kernels (2.6.1x) and
disappear again when booting back into the older one (debian, home
rolled kernels, on PE1850 if I'm not mistaken).
I think this is an indication that the issue is somewhere in the
hardware detection of the kernel/network driver, not the hardware.
