OSMA 5 on Fedora Core 4

Robert,

The job of an RPM package is to first run pre requirement check. In the pre requirement check the rpm verifies that all dependencies the software, that the user attempt to install, is met etc. If dependencies are not met, you will be told that you need to solve these dependencies first.

In this case the software, OMSA, is designed for, and depend on, specific hardware to work as intended. It is perfectly reasonable to test for this dependency before copying the files into place.

Harald,

I think you misunderstand my question. The issue is nothing to do with whether or not "OMSA 5.0" supports my particular hardware. The issue is the there is an RPM installation script which throws out errors even though there is no problem with the copying of files into the filesystem. The error is IN THE WRONG PLACE. If the software that is installed does not "support" my hardware (whatever that means) then the software will give me a useful error report when I execute it. It is not the job of an RPM script to try and determine whether or not there will be an error once the software which it is supposed to be installing is finally installed. The fact that it does this is silly, and I'm wondering why. What was the justification for the design decision? What was the reason?

Robert

OMSA 5.0 does not support PE 4300.

This is why the installation tell you: "srvadmin-deng: not supported on this system (sysid=007C)"

You should have a look at the readme file for OMSA 5.0 where you will see what systems are supported.

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin/5.0/en/readme/readme_sa.txt

The following Dell PowerEdge systems are supported for
"Installation and Server Management" CD version 5.0: 600SC, 650, 700,
750, 800, 830, 850, 1600SC, 1650, 1655MC, 1750, 1800, 1850, 1855MC,
1950, 1955, 2600, 2650, 2800, 2850, 2900, 2950, 4600, 6600, 6650,
6800, and 6850.

Also from the same readme:

######################################################################
RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS
######################################################################

* Removed support for the following Dell PowerEdge systems: x4xx and
  x5xx.

Your system is x3xx system.......

The last readme file that I can find that support x3xx systems is:

DELL OPENMANAGE(TM) SERVER ADMINISTRATOR 1.4 README
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/software/svradmin/1.4/en/readme/readme.txt

This version of OMSA can be downloaded from:

Systems Management: Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, , OpenManage Server Administrator and Remote Install (Agent), Linux, Multi Language, Multi System, v.1.4, A02
