I think you are mixing up the version numbers. The kernel you have (2.6.9-5) 
is the oldest kernel available for RHEL4. The 2.6.9-34.0.2 kernel is much 
newer, so upgrading to it should be no problem.

I think 2.6.9-42 is also supported by EMC, but you'll have to check the 
compatibility list for that.
