CX300 + PE2950 => No support with shipped kernel version ?

If I read the EMC matrix correctly the u4 kernel (2.6.9-42) is supported. You 
should probably go with this. Make sure you're reading an up-to-date 
compatibility matrix since EL4u4 is quite new.

As for the 2.6.9-5 kernel, that is the _original_ EL4 kernel, it is veeeery 
old and has numerous security problems and will probably _not_ work well with 
your hardware.
