Fw: APC UPS software and USB port

FYI, if anyone else is curious about APC's PowerChute software.

APC does not support a USB connection in their agent software for Linux, you
must use a serial port. Also, they only offer the PowerChute "agent"
component on Linux. You have to install the "server" component of
PowerChute on a Windows server, and it runs as a service on Windows. The
server component communicates with the agent and the server component can be
setup to page or email you if there are any problems with the UPS.

Thanks,
Brandon

Subject: APC UPS software and USB port

Hi,

I am trying to set up my APC PowerChute Business Edition 7.0.4 on my
PowerEdge 2850 with RHEL4. The UPS came with a cable to go from a computer's
USB port to the DB9 port on the UPS. It also came with another cable to go
from a computer's DB9 serial port to the DB9 port on the UPS.

I am running the configuration script to configure the software, and it is
asking for a serial port as shown below. I'd like to use the USB cable if
possible.

Select the serial port
[1]: /dev/ttyS0
[2]: /dev/ttyS1
[3]: Other
> 3
Please type in the serial port
*Case-sensitive (ex: /dev/ttyS0)

I am wondering if anyone has used this software with the USB cable, or does
it look like I will have to use my serial port for this software?

Thanks,
Brandon Coale
