Blinking lights

Whether you can install OMSA (OpenManage Server Admin) depends on your
system model. The latest build for debian seems to be 4.4, so it'll
need to be a server supported by OMSA 4.4. See the OMSA user guides for
supported models.

Basically, as far as official Dell documentation, we don't send much
physical documentation, it's all on support.dell.com (html and pdf forms
are easier to keep updated than paper). Downloads and Drivers will let
you search for official downloads (only RedHat and SuSE supported,
though). There's also the Manuals section with user guides. You can go
under Systems for user guides and service/repair manuals for the
hardware, or Software (Software->System Management for OpenManage) for
any software manuals.

If you're running a distro that's not supported/sold by us, then
support.dell.com user guides will only partially help (some sections of
the user guide will be irrelevant, such as the RPM installations, but
most of the sections are relevant for any distro). For installation in
unsupported distros, you may go to linux.dell.com. A lot of our
community work is posted there. Currently, if you go to Hardware
Monitoring on that site, info for installing OMSA on debian is listed.
It appears that the latest version they've created debs for is 4.4, so
that won't support our latest generation (2950/2900, 1950/1900, etc),
but the OMSA on debian page says his OMSA 5.0 deb build is under
construction.

But, if you're running an x9xx server, I think somebody else replied
that you can use the BMC tools to pull the SEL.

	Ok,

	Good information, thanks.

Probably a stupid question, but where can I get "Server
Administrator" ? (Ubuntu/Debian would be good)

The paperwork that came with the machines wasn't "too" helpful
..

	Thanks,
	Gareth.

It sounds like the servers are reporting an error. You
should check your system event log through OpenManage Server
Administrator. The "normal" state for all of your servers is either
solid blue (no errors reported) or amber (when there's an error).
Pressing the (i)dentify button will cause a server in either state to
blink blue (so you can find the front/back of the same server if you're
working on it and moving from front to back of the rack). Pressing
(i)dentify again will return it to its previous state.

The system event log will let you know why it's
reporting an error, and it could be as simple as a warning (one power
cable unplugged, cover remover from top of system, single-bit memory
errors, etc) or something that requires attention (fan failure, CPU
failure, etc). Since the servers are apparently working, it's likely a
warning, but should be investigated, because redundancy may be lost in
some component of the system.

If you don't have Server Administrator installed, you
may want to call support, as depending on your system model and Linux
distribution, you may be able to run Dell DSET, boot to a floppy to pull
the system event log, or you may have to boot to our OpenManage LiveCD
on linux.dell.com.

			Hi,

I know there is an entry on this in the FAQ, but
the lights on two of my servers flash - no matter what I press in terms
of front or back panel buttons. All the buttons do it let me choose
between blue or orange.

Other apparently identical servers have constant
non-flashing lights.

Anyone know why or if I should be worried ?

			Gareth.
