Hi,
Memdisk is part of the SYSLINUX package, the bootloader..
Memdisk is a pice of software that can load a floppy or harddrive image into a RAM drive and then it will boot from the RAM drive.
Memdisk is not a part of the Dell CD image.
What you need to do is:
1. Download this file: http://ftp.us.dell.com/diags/MP1038A0.tar.gz
2. Extract that file to /boot
3. Copy the file "memdisk" from the syslinux package into /boot
The "memdisk" file is usually found in "/usr/lib/syslinux"
4. Edit your bootloader configuration.
Example bootloader config for grub:
title Dell Memory Test
kernel /memdisk
initrd /Mlp10381.img
6. Now reboot your system and select "Dell Memory Test" in the Grub bootloader.
7. Run the tests..
Regards
Harald Jensås

I'm still confused. Memdisk test is not part of the Dell CD image. I see that there're some memory problems, but I can't figure out bad DIMMs, which have to be replaced.

I don't have any problem with boot block.
My problem is memdisk file, which is supposed to be used as a kernel.
Thanks,

Like I said the only way that I know off to do this is with the winimage software.
Steps are: Open the ISO, Goto the Image menu, then select "Boot Sector Properties...", then click export.
Does anyone know how to do this in linux?

Patrick,
How can I obtain memdisk file? When I mount the image I see only boot.txt file.
Thanks,
Artur

Ok here is how to do it (sorry my steps are going to require windows, maybe someone know how to do this step in linux)
Required software: WinImage, memdisk
1. Download ISO
2. Extract Boot Sector from ISO using WinImage and call it memtest.img
3. Put memdisk and memtest.img in /boot
4. Add the following entry to your grub menu:
title Dell Memory Test
kernel /memdisk
initrd /memtest.img
Hope that helps, though I'm not sure how to redirect this to a serial port, if you have redirection on in the BIOS it should probably work though.

Subject: memory test on Linux
Hello,
I need to test physical memory in PE1425SC. I have serial console to the computer and I run RHE4 OS. Dell provides only ISO images http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&SystemID=PWE_XEO_1425SC&os=LIN4&osl=en&deviceid=3053&typecnt=1&libid=13&releaseid=R102626&vercnt=2. Can anyone advise a way to run Dell memory test remotely, like http://www.memtest86.com/, where special memory test kernel can be specified in boot manager.
Thanks,
Artur
