That's true, but 80pin cables are not mandatory for modes up to UDMA2
(33Mbytes/sec).  And since the cable is detectable, the controller should
simply step the performance down appropriately.  If you're actually getting
problems I'd suggest it's due to low quality 40 pin cabling, or a fault of the
controller.  It's still a bit tight.
