If a commercial product is of interest, I can recommend BackupEDGE 
(www.microlite.com), which I've used for 15 years on all the servers we build. 
Excellent reporting and error handling, and terrific feature set all around. Years 
ago when I migrated to Linux, I dumped most of the proprietary software I'd been 
using in favor of open source programs.  Never considered even once abandoning 
Microlite's product as my backup solution.
