Out of memory - but only 500M out of 4GB in use

Yes exactly, it's disk cache.. So in theory it can be counted as free 
allocatable space from a programs point of view. Either that or Linux, 
unlike e.g. windhoze, treats extra memory as an anonymous RAM disk.... 
can't believe that.
