I am still looking to improve my performance in Linux to an on my Perc
4e/DI controller, but in the process of testing etc. I took the exact
same Power Edge 2850 and ran iozone in Windows Standard 2003 and Red Hat
Linux ES 4 update 2 (kernel 2.6.9-22). I saw a couple of posts in the
past asking about the performance difference on the OSs so I figured I
would post the results from these tests.
Hardware: PE2850 dual Pentium Xeon 3.0Ghz 2 MB cache processors, perc
4e/DI, 2 x 73 GB 10K RPM Seagate drives in Raid 1, 6 GB RAM (windows
limits to 4 on standard), dual port on board Broadcom gigabit NICs,
Intel PRO/1000MT dual port, Adaptec 39160.
Perc 4e/DI bios updated to 521x
Software configurations (not a dual boot, but actually rebuilt the OS):
Red Hat Linux ES 4 update 2 (kernel 2.6.9-22), standard install with
Dell drivers and bios, booted without X, most services where stopped,
open management was not installed, VMware GSX 3.2 server, no running
virtual machines.
Windows 2003 Standard, standard install with Dell drivers, open
management not installed, no additional Windows services, VMware GSX 3.2
server, no running virtual machines
