Best Configuration

I'm interested in getting a PowerEdge and would like Linux on it.  I would
prefer Debian (sarge) since that is what I'm most familiar with; however, I
can be convinced otherwise most likely.  Can someone give me an idea of
which server is best (looking at 1U or 2U max), and what configuration is
best, and what problems I should be aware of?
