Dmidecode utility will have a listing of service tag of your machine.
More helpful would be libsmbios:

Which has binary that gets the service tag of your machine.

Subject: Dell PowerEdge 2450 Service Tag number extraction
I am trying to extract the service code of a Dell gx270 or a Dell d600
when it boots up and then put this into a variable in a script so I can
make sure the computer gets named in WIndows xp per its service tag.
Do you know of the utility called dmidecode and would this do it and if
not what would and if it will do it can you give me an example of a
script file that would use the utility to get the Service Tag of the
Dell computer out of the bios and then name the computer in the registry
per this service tag?
