Ubuntu Breezy & kernel compile

Hi all,
I have just joined the list as we just received a Dell Poweredge 1855 
Chassis with 2 blades.  My problem is when I recompile a new kernel 
(2.6.16-13) I get "ALERT! /dev/sda2 does not exist ... dropping to shell."
I have compiled in pretty much all SCSI options in the hope of solving 
this problem, but I think I'm missing something. Does anyone have an 
example kernel config?
