Debian on PowerEdge 1800 with CERC-6 RAID controller

So we just received a new PowerEdge, and I'm itching to get Debian
installed.

We have a Debian 3.0 Full Install disk, and a 3.1 Net Install disk.
The former boots, but doesn't recognize the drives (RAID 5, CERC 6
controller) the server shipped with, while the latter does not boot
at all. I've searched the archives of this list for information on
this issue, and have found pointers to aacraid and other tools, but I
don't seem to be in a position to actually run such a tool on the
machine. Do I need to first install Debian on a separate, non-RAID
drive and then bootstrap myself to the RAID? I'd prefer not to.
