Sounds like you have a bad raid controller. I've lost countless
disks in Dell servers from 2400's through 2850's in raid 5 and 10
and have never lost access to the data or even had the server go
down; just pop a new disk in at my convenience and it's good to
go. Some of those older servers were excruciatingly slow to begin
with and got even worse with a dead drive but they always remained
online.
