compile kernel on 2850

so my install-procedure for 2.6.17.1-kernel on a PE1855:
compile kernel without --initrd option
copy kernel to machine beeing upgraded.
install kernel-image
install yaird from source on machine beeing updated
make initrd with yaird
reboot

now, that was easy says man, and goes on to compile the kernel  with
support  for all the nice dell-stuff.
