I might be on a completely wrong path here, but aren't
/dev/sda.. /dev/sdd just symlinks to files in /dev/scsi/.... (if
you're using hotplug that is!). In that case proper modification of hotplug
scripts (probably in /etc/hotplug.d) should fix all those names once
and for all...

Just my 2 cents worht...
