BIOS / firmware update CD?

Am I the only one who longs for the days of the Dell SNAP CD and all
of its bootable, firmware updating goodness? :)

Seriously, though, the need to have a running OS to do upgrades is
ridiculous.  What if you wanted to do the firmware upgrades *before*
you installed the OS??  I can't imagine I'm the only person who wants
to do this (and judging by this thread, I'm not).
