1600SC and IPMI

I recently managed to get OMSA 4.4 to work with my Debian system
(kernel 2.6.17), using the dcdbas and dcdtvm kernel modules. However,
I would really prefer to use the lm-sensors package for monitoring, and
so far I haven't been able to get that working. I've compiled the
I2C-PIIX4 drivers, but dmesg reports this after loading them:
> piix4_smbus 0000:00:0f.0: Found 0000:00:0f.0 device
> piix4_smbus 0000:00:0f.0: Host SMBus controller not enabled!
Using the force=1 parameter seems to work, until I use sensors-detect,
which causes the machine to crash. I've read on an lm-sensors forum
that because the details of the ServerWorks CSB5 chipset aren't
available, there's nothing they can do. I also noticed that the 1600SC
is not listed on this page: http://linux.dell.com/ipmi.shtml However
Matt Domsch has stated that the x6xx and newer series servers have IPMI
compatability. Does the 1600SC in fact have IPMI capability, or am I
wasting my time on this?
I also read on the Dell Linux blog page that all SC models are now not
supported since OMSA 4.5, so am I stuck with 4.4? I would really like
to find a way to monitor my server without using OMSA, because it's not
only cumbersome but it sounds like it no longer supports my hardware.
I'm sure it's only a matter of time until OMSA 4.4 won't compile into
the next kernel. Do I have any options besides OMSA? I'm really only
interested in being able to monitor my hardware, I don't need the
configuration features (like BIOS and alert action) nearly as much.
